Some of 2014

2014 will leave us soon. There are so many things happened there. However, I am too lazy to write all the things and post it in this blog. Even sometimes the blog totally forgotten, never been updated for so long. The main excuse perhaps due to abundant works to do every single weekday. While during weekend, I prefer to squirm all day in my house or hang out with couples of friends. Hopefully in 2015 the blog will be regularly updated by me. At least, I am able to spare my time to write a post a week.

Since the year will end in few days, I would love to summarize some of interesting things this year. From desire to vacate, never ending run race, and passion in language learning. These three items has become my main interest in 2014. I really like it but somehow I have to manage it properly so that I can get the most utility from all these activities.

Early 2014 is my first time to go abroad. Finally, I can use the passport I made last year. I visited Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with PPSDM pals. We wanted to meet our couple friends, Kenny & Mikail who continued their studies in International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM). I had opportunity to come to their campus too for Friday prayer. I felt like I was in Middle East because the weather is little bit hotter than Jakarta. Eventhough I only stayed there for few days, it was enough to sightsee any tourism objects around KL.

Three months later I went to Singapore, with another gang. We named ourselves KBC or Key Bee See. It was our first vacation together. There are a lot of interesting spots in Singapore but due to our short visit, we were not able to visit them all. Moreover, we wasted a day in Universal Studio Singapore that happened to be so crowded with crazy queue and unexpected technical error. It made our mood turned bad. On the last day, we did not have much time there. We only come the landmark, Merlion and went shopping at Bugis. I wish I had more days to spend then I could have explored around the country.

All these traveling experiences made me crave for some more. I had desire to travel more and more that time. I took my mandatory block leave in the end of May since I planed to go to Vietnam with KBC that time but got cancelled and turned out to be Singapore vacation I told before. Thankfully my old friend, Ato saved my leave so that it was not wasted at home. We went to Ujung Genteng, Sukabumi, West Java and stayed with his relatives several days. The journey was really challenging and tiring of course. Yet, the beautiful beaches and cute sea creatures paid it off. The water was so clear that I could see some fishes, echinoderms, and mollusks playing along on the sea side. I also went to Bali several months later for office outing. After all, 2014 is really year of traveling for me.

November last year, I ran my first 5K. Actually I did not fully run, I walked sometimes to regain my strength. However, this experience really changed my mindset. I never thought before there was a sport where almost all the participants could be winners. In a running race, every finisher deserves their medal which means every participant who successfully finish the race are simply winners. Not against other participants but against themselves, or specifically their negative thoughts that they could not finish the race. In running, our mind really plays important part. It all depends on your mindset whether we could finish the race or not. In 2014, races were held sporadically almost every week of the month. I really enjoyed joining some of them. So far, I have collected more than twenty medals this year and BajakJKT 2014 was my closing race.

In mid 2014, I revived my passion in language learning. I even registered for Korean course for the first time. The main reason why I learn Korean is because I love Korean music (K-Pop) very much, learning Korean will make me easier to understand the meaning of a song. Besides, I thought it would be a fun activity after office. It was really fun actually, taught by native speaker. The teacher (김명화 선생님) was very kind and funny sometimes. All the students love her and really want to be taught by her again next term.

After learning some Korean, I have desire to learn more languages and be the real polyglot (it won't be easy though). Since 2014 ends soon, I already made some plans next year. I want to take Arabic course, besides I will take my Korean course on advance level. Thanks to handy mobile app such as Duolingo and Memrise, I can also learn independently using my smartphone. I can't wait to learn more languages next year.
